There's a place right around the corner from Copacabana Palace, on Rua Rudolpho Dantes, about a half block up the street. It just has a sign out front that says "Churascarro" or however the hell you spell it. Great food, great service, not too expensive.

I know this might sound like a dumb Q but I'm thinking in different cultures different foods are more popular on the barbacue.

@cariocawannabe -- A barbecue place in Brasil is like drowning in meat. Totally different kind of barbecue from what you can get from over here. Unless of course, if you're at a Brasilian churrascaria here.

@Carioca--First you go to a Salad Bar, and the one in the restaurant I mentioned is really good. In fact, my first time there, I thought that's all I was getting--the salad bar--and I was quite impressed. It's got everything, but don't fill up on salad, because in a few minutes server after server will bring meat to your table and you tell him whether or not you want it. Every possible type of meat prepared every possible way. It is really good. And then they try to sell you dessert -- I've never made it that far.

The meat isn't barbeque like is eaten in the states (and Canada, I presume). No barbeque sauce, no cole slaw, no hamburger buns. I think they call it barbeque because it's cooked on a grill. So it's like different cuts of beef, pork, chicken -- everything. Imagine cooking a steak or chicken on an outdoor grill--that's what the meat is like.

If I remember correctly, the cost for this is R$29 -- about $11 give or take. (Drinks and dessert are extra).

I know you guys think of the rodízio - all you can eat - places when you go to Rio but, if you'd like to try quality instead of quantity - at good prices - try the Churrascaria Majórica, Rua Senador Vergueiro 11, Flamengo (easy to reach with the metro). They also have a restaurant in Petrópolis.

They follow a normal menu-based system but it is worth it. They serve the best picanha steak I have ever tried.

Found a cool restaurant with a great view of sugar loaf and the marina in rio. It's called Zin and an outside patio....atop the Botofogo (sp?) Mall in Rio. Lots of couples hooking up... pretty good place to have dinner with a ladyfriend.

Nothing can beat the churrascarias in SP. Try Baby Beef Rubayat , Jardineira Grill, Varanda Grill, Esplanada Grill and Buenos Aires Classic, then go back to Rio and try eating that crap carioca calls "churrasco".
